Basic Observation Buoy (BOB) Workshop
SECOORA partner COSEE Southeast and SECOORA are pleased to announce a collaborative workshop to demonstrate Basic Observation Buoy (BOB) construction and deployment!
- Dates: 29-30 January 2009
- Location: Skidaway Institute of Oceanography (Savannah, Georgia)
PLEASE NOTE: Registration is limited to 25 participants and the deadline is December 2, 2008.
Interested participants can view/download the full working agenda and registration information.
Basic Observation Buoy (BOB) design kit document.
Description: A collaborative workshop to promote and extend coastal ocean observing information, technology and societal benefits using a scaled down, but operational, Basic Observation Buoy (BOB)--a floating buoy anchored to the bottom or FLO (Fixed Local Observations)--a device fixed to a piling or dock structure.
Purpose: To extend the BOB/FLO concept developed from NOAA Chesapeake Bay Office by bringing Doug Levin to the SECOORA region for an extension education project.
Workshop Participants: Invitation to participate is extended to scientists and educators in NC, SC, GA and FL.
- FL Lead: Pat Welsh (pwelsh@unf.edu)
- GA Lead: Jim Sanders (jim.sanders@skio.usg.edu)
- SC Lead: Lundie Spence (lundie.spence@scseagrant.org)
- NC Lead: Lynn Leonard (lynnl@uncw.edu)
Scientists and educators will construct, modify and adapt the buoy model, construction procedures, sensors, telemetry and its materials. COSEE SE and NOAA will provide 20 BOB/FLO Kits. We will also provide each kit with a type of sensor and we will provide five sensors to be shared among the different state participants.
Outreach Strategy: Workshop participants can engage local faculty/educators/teachers to initiate and extend this workshop to undergraduate, informal students (adults or clubs) or middle/high school student project to increase understanding of coastal ocean observation and information. This project addresses instrumentation/sensors, continuous data collection, STEM education and application of technology in a project atmosphere. BOB/FLO workshop builds off of COSEE SE Professional Development workshops, such as Taking the Pulse of Our Coastal Ocean (TPOCO) and Undersea Research and Technology (Remotely Operated Vehicles-MIT Sea Pearch ROVs) and the Gray’s Reef NMS ROV MATE Competition. To promote the extension of BOB/FLO for similar workshops designed for teachers or informal educators or students in FL, GA, NC, and SC through university, schools, aquaria, Sea Grant, or marine extension programs.
