Carolyn A. Dekle, Executive Director, South Florida

Carolyn A. Dekle, is the executive director of the South Florida Regional Planning Council, a regional planning and public policy agency and one of 11 regional councils in the state. The Council serves three counties: Monroe, Miami-Dade, and Broward; 71 municipalities; and over 4 million residents.
Prior to becoming executive director in October 1991, Carolyn served as the Council’s assistant director and was responsible for program management. Carolyn’s specific responsibilities include development and administration of the local plan review process and development and implementation of the Strategic Regional Policy Plan for South Florida. Building consensus around the identification and resolution of critical issues and policies for the South Florida area is an area of primary responsibility.
Carolyn was a member of Governor Bob Graham’s staff from 1979 to 1986, including four years as staff within the Governor’s Strategic Planning Policy Unit. This Unit was primarily responsible for the creation of Florida’s Growth Management legislation and specifically the development of Florida’s State Plan.
Carolyn has served on numerous boards and committees including the Governor’s Affordable Housing Task Force which recommended passage of Florida’s Sadowski Act, and the first Florida Affordable Housing Study Commission. She is currently a member of the Miami-Dade County Climate Change Advisory Task Force; the South Florida Water Management District’s Water Resource Advisory Commission; the National Association of Regional Councils; the National Association of Development Organizations; the SE Florida / Caribbean Chapter of the Urban Land Institute; the Southeastern Regional Directors Council of Peers; the American Planning Association; the Alliance for Regional Stewardship; and the Florida Regional Councils Association. She has held numerous leadership positions in these organizations over the years.
