Dr. Lundie Spence

Dr. LUNDIE SPENCE is the Director of the Center for Ocean Sciences Education Excellence SouthEast (COSEE SE), administered by the SC Sea Grant Consortium, Charleston, SC. COSEE SE has coordinated the education outreach for SEACOOS since 2003 in partnership with COSEE Florida and COSEE Gulf of Mexico. The COSEE National Network is charged by NSF to maintain engagement with observing systems and to increase education/scientist interactions. COSEE SE serves NC, SC and GA. Spence has been the Extension and Education Working Group Chair and part of SEACOOS Executive Committee for two years.
Spence received her B.A. (Biology) from Mary Baldwin College, Staunton, VA, M.S. (Biological Sciences/Oceanography) from Florida State University and Ph.D. (Science Education) from NCSU. From 1977-2002, Spence was the NC Sea Grant marine education specialist and taught interdisciplinary oceanography and environmental education on undergraduate and graduate levels at NCSU from 1978-2002. She has adjunct faculty status with College of Charleston.
Her current areas of interest relate to research-based professional development programs for teachers, which include strategies for incorporating coastal ocean observing data into formal and informal education. She has written articles and made conference presentations/posters about ocean observing at AGU, Oceans ’05, MTS and NMEA.
Spence is an AAAS Fellow, recipient of the Woman’s Aquatic Network Achievement Award (DC), NOAA Environmental Hero and past president of the National Marine Educators Association. Recently she received recognition by NC Big Sweep “You Make a World of Difference 2006,” SC Marine Education Association “Marine Educator of the Year 2005,” and National Marine Educators Association “Honorary Member 2006.” She is a member of the SCSGC Program Advisory Board and 113 Calhoun Street House Board of Directors.
