Sandra Vargo

Sandra Vargo has been the Assistant Director of the Florida Institute of Oceanography (FIO) since 1982. The FIO is a 20 member consortium of public and private universities, private research institutions, and state agencies under the state university system of Florida. The FIO mission is the promotion of research opportunities for its members and the management of shared use facilities such as the state’s two oceanographic research vessels and the Keys Marine Laboratory. Her major responsibility at the FIO is to coordinate the numerous science projects managed by this statewide consortium. The SEAKEYS network of 7 real-time automated environmental monitoring stations in the Florida Keys is among the projects managed by Dr. Vargo. The SEAKEYS network stretches from Fowey Rocks offshore from Miami to the Dry Tortugas. The data collected is freely available via the Internet to any interested parties. Dr. Vargo received her doctorate from the University of Rhode Island in biological oceanography in the area of zooplankton physiology and ecology.
