Meet the Winners of the 2023 Vembu Subramanian Ocean Scholars Award

In remembrance of Vembu Subramanian – our friend, colleague and the SECOORA Data Manager – we established an award for the next generation of ocean experts to meet others in their field and present their work at meetings or conferences. The Vembu Subramanian Ocean Scholars Award gives the opportunity for undergraduate students, graduate students, and early career professionals to seek funding to facilitate their participation in their conference of choice. NOW HIRING: Pre/Post-Award Specialist (Part-Time Contractor)

SECOORA is hiring a Pre- and Post-Award Specialist. In collaboration with the SECOORA management team, the Pre- and Post-Award Specialist will develop and execute comprehensive strategies for full life-cycle grant management. This will include managing grant proposal development, specifically grant budget development and individual Principal Investigator (PI) grant budget reviews, subaward and contract development, and award tracking. SECOORA manages multiple, but less than 10, grants annually and issues subawards and contracts to approximately 40-60 Principal Investigators (PIs) at approximately 20 institutions in the four-state region and beyond.

REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS: Enhancing Marine Science Curriculum for K-12 Formal and Informal Educators

SECOORA is seeking innovative proposals to create curriculum materials that effectively engage K-12 students to enhance their understanding of our coastal and ocean environments. The marine science curricula and/or activities must be online-accessible so they can be implemented by parents, teachers, and other educators. All materials developed through this request for proposals will be made available on SECOORA’s classroom activities webpage. This award value is $8,500. Proposals are due 5:00 PM ET on Friday, October 27, 2023. All funds must be used within one year of the project’s start date. The anticipated start date is January 5, 2024.

FUNDING OPPORTUNITY: Vembu Subramanian Ocean Scholars Award

In remembrance of Vembu Subramanian, SECOORA established an award for the next generation of ocean experts to meet others in their field and present their work at meetings or conferences. SECOORA has $2,500 total to support the participation of 2-3 recipients in an in-person regional, national, or international meeting or conference. The maximum individual award value is $1,250 to cover travel and conference/meeting costs. Proposals are due Tuesday, October 3, 5:00 PM ET via egrants.secoora.org.

ShellCast Has Expanded to Include the South Carolina Coast

ShellCast is a digital tool that helps shellfish farmers make data-driven management decisions by predicting shellfish lease closures. Originally focused on the North Carolina coast, the app has now expanded to offer lease closure predictions for shellfish waters along the South Carolina coast.
