REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS: Enhancing Marine Science Curriculum for K-12 Formal and Informal Educators

SECOORA is seeking innovative proposals to create curriculum materials that effectively engage K-12 students to enhance their understanding of our coastal and ocean environments. The marine science curricula and/or activities must be online-accessible so they can be implemented by parents, teachers, and other educators. All materials developed through this request for proposals will be made available on SECOORA’s classroom activities webpage. This award value is $8,500. Proposals are due 5:00 PM ET on Friday, October 27, 2023. All funds must be used within one year of the project’s start date. The anticipated start date is January 5, 2024.

The Southeast Coastal Ocean Observing Regional Association (SECOORA) Data Challenge invites undergraduate students, graduate students, and early career professionals to develop a project that combines multiple Southeast datasets to understand a coastal and/or ocean event or trend. There are two $3,500 prizes available. Proposals are due Friday, October 6, 2023 via egrants.secoora.org.

FUNDING OPPORTUNITY: Vembu Subramanian Ocean Scholars Award

In remembrance of Vembu Subramanian, SECOORA established an award for the next generation of ocean experts to meet others in their field and present their work at meetings or conferences. SECOORA has $2,500 total to support the participation of 2-3 recipients in an in-person regional, national, or international meeting or conference. The maximum individual award value is $1,250 to cover travel and conference/meeting costs. Proposals are due Tuesday, October 3, 5:00 PM ET via egrants.secoora.org.

ShellCast Has Expanded to Include the South Carolina Coast

ShellCast is a digital tool that helps shellfish farmers make data-driven management decisions by predicting shellfish lease closures. Originally focused on the North Carolina coast, the app has now expanded to offer lease closure predictions for shellfish waters along the South Carolina coast.

The BioTrack Initiative: A Network to Assess and Monitor Biodiversity Hotspots

The Marine Biodiversity Observation Network (MBON) and the Animal Telemetry Network (ATN) of the Integrated Ocean Observing System (IOOS) have joined forces to create the BioTrack Initiative. This collaborative network assesses and monitors biodiversity hotspots by integrating satellite and acoustic tracking data from marine animals, including fish, sharks, turtles, crabs, seabirds, and marine mammals.
