SECOORA successfully submitted a proposal, titled “Southeast Coastal Ocean Observing Regional Association (SECOORA): Delivering actionable coastal and ocean information from high-quality science and observations for the Southeast” in response to the US Integrated Ocean Observing System (IOOS®) FY 2020 Notice of Funding Opportunity, NOAA-NOS-IOOS-2021-2006475.
Priorities over the next five years will focus on sustaining SECOORA coastal ocean activities while expanding our observing system to include new capabilities, not only along the coastline, but also into the rivers and estuaries. With coastal communities facing the compound threat of storm surge, extreme rainfall, and rising sea level, additional high-density observing networks are necessary to meet these communities needs and provide decision-making support that protects public health, saves lives, and supports economic vitality.
Below is a schematic of the overall proposal. With oversight from Governance and Management, and in collaboration with Principal Investigators and Data Management and Cyberinfrastructure (DMAC), SECOORA will continue to manage and integrate observations and models for a suite of tools and applications. Each component is linked to priority stakeholder needs under three themes.
The proposed activities will not only deliver stakeholders the ongoing observations and modeling products on which they already rely, but also enable innovative approaches that leverage existing SECOORA efforts (observations, models and DMAC) to create new and exciting collaborations. These efforts also provide the opportunity to strengthen existing collaborations and forge new partnerships that can be further leveraged by SECOORA and IOOS. SECOORA would like to thank everyone who participated and contributed in the proposal development process. There were 36 academic partners on this proposal and over 90 Letters of Support from users in the region. SECOORA is excited to continue to coordinate and champion coastal ocean observing science in the Southeast.
